The short version
- The medicine, not the customs desk, is the fragile part of this plan.
- Unopened pens belong at 2–8°C. A long trip without cooling is the risk.
- Leaflet allowances for time out of the fridge apply to pens already in use, not as a travel licence.
- Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are not on NAFDAC's register, so nothing you bring in carries a Nigerian registration number.
Plenty of Nigerians buy their pens abroad, either personally or through family. It is a reasonable idea that goes wrong in a specific, predictable way: the pen arrives looking perfect and no longer works.
What the leaflets actually allow
| Pen | Unopened | Once in use |
|---|---|---|
| Ozempic | Fridge, 2–8°C | Up to 6 weeks below 30°C |
| Wegovy | Fridge, 2–8°C | Up to 6 weeks below 30°C |
| Mounjaro KwikPen | Fridge, 2–8°C | Up to 30 days below 30°C |
Two things people misread here. First, the in-use allowance is for a pen you have started, and the clock does not reset when you put it back in a fridge. Second, "below 30°C" is not a Nigerian afternoon. A car boot in Lagos comfortably exceeds it, and so does a suitcase on an airport apron.
Freezing destroys a pen as thoroughly as heat. Never pack a pen directly against ice, or in checked luggage that may sit in a cold hold. If a pen has frozen, the leaflets are explicit: do not use it.
How to travel with a pen, if you are going to
- Hand luggage, always. Checked bags get hot, cold and lost.
- Use a proper medical cool bag with a cooling element that is not in direct contact with the pen.
- Carry the box and the leaflet, not a loose pen. The labelling is what identifies it.
- Carry the prescription or dispensing label from the country you bought it in. Airport security questions are much shorter with paperwork.
- Refrigerate on arrival, immediately, and note how many hours it spent out.
The regulatory position, plainly
None of these three medicines currently appears on NAFDAC's register of products approved for the Nigerian market. That is true of what is sold here and of what you carry in yourself. It means no pen in Nigeria has a NAFDAC registration number to check, and it is worth knowing before you assume a personal import is simply the safe route.
Customs treatment of medicines carried for personal use is a question for NAFDAC and the Nigeria Customs Service rather than for a website. If you plan to bring in more than a personal supply, ask them first.
How to tell whether the trip ruined it
You mostly cannot, by looking. Degraded semaglutide and tirzepatide stay clear and colourless. The tells that do exist are worth checking: cloudiness, particles, discolouration, or a pen that was visibly frozen. Any of those means do not inject.
The practical test is the next four weeks. If a pen that should suppress appetite does nothing at all, and you took it correctly, suspect the pen rather than your body. Our guide on counterfeit and damaged pens goes through the checks in order.
The honest comparison
Buying abroad can be cheaper per pen. Add the flight, the cool bag, the risk of a ruined pen and the fact that you cannot replace it locally the same day, and the saving narrows quickly. It makes most sense when someone is travelling anyway and can keep the pen cold door to door.
