The short version

GLP-1 medicines slow how fast your stomach empties. That is part of how they work, and it is also why food that used to be comfortable now sits like a stone. The fix is less about willpower and more about what you put in and how much.

Why Nigerian food can be harder on a GLP-1

Two features of the food many of us grew up on make nausea worse: oil and volume. A generous scoop of palm or groundnut oil in a stew slows emptying further. A full round of pounded yam or eba is a large volume arriving at once, which is exactly what a slower stomach cannot handle.

None of this means abandoning the food. It means changing the ratio and the portion.

What tends to sit well

MealWhy it works
Light pepper soup with fish or chickenWarm, thin, low fat, easy volume, and it keeps fluids up
Moi moiProtein-dense, soft, steamed rather than fried
Pap or akamu, small portionBland and gentle on the worst days, though low in protein
Boiled yam or plantain with a light sauceEasier than fried versions, and easy to portion small
Grilled fish, chicken or suya without heavy oilProtein first, which matters for muscle
Okra or efo riro made light on oilVegetables and moisture, without the fat load

What tends to make it worse

A 48-hour plan for injection day

  1. Inject in the evening, so the roughest hours pass while you sleep. Keep the same day each week.
  2. Eat light the next morning. Pap, moi moi or eggs rather than a heavy breakfast.
  3. Halve your portions for two days, and eat four small meals instead of two large ones.
  4. Keep fluids going. Water, unsweetened zobo or a light broth. Sip rather than gulp.
  5. Return to normal on day three, when most people feel fine again.

Ginger helps some people. Fresh ginger in hot water is cheap, widely available and worth trying. It is not a substitute for reducing portions and fat.

Constipation, the quieter problem

More people end up constipated than nauseated on these medicines, and it gets less attention. Water, fibre from vegetables and beans, and daily movement fix most cases. Beans help but produce gas, which on a slow stomach can be uncomfortable, so introduce them gradually.

When it is not just nausea

See a doctor promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, if vomiting lasts more than a day or two, or if you have severe abdominal pain that radiates to your back. Persistent vomiting in Nigerian heat also risks dehydration, which is its own emergency.
