The short version
- Ask every question before the transfer, not after.
- Evasiveness about storage, batch numbers or account names is the answer.
- You are entitled to the batch number and expiry before you pay.
- A seller who changes the price after you commit is telling you who they are.
The GLP-1 market in Nigeria is unregulated in practice, whatever the rules say on paper. That leaves buyers doing their own due diligence on a ₦400,000 to ₦900,000 purchase, usually over WhatsApp, usually paying first. These are the questions that actually separate sellers.
1. What name is on the account I am paying into?
It should match the business. A personal account name for a business transaction is the most common pattern in advance-payment fraud, and it also means you have almost no recourse.
2. What is the batch number and expiry date?
Ask before payment. Then check both against the pen when it arrives. A seller who will not give you this in advance either does not have the pen yet or does not want you checking.
3. Where is the stock right now, and how will it reach me?
"In our fridge in Lagos, dispatched by rider in a cold box" is an answer. "We will sort it out" is not. If the stock is coming up from another city after you pay, you are funding a long journey during which the medicine can be ruined.
4. How is it kept cold, exactly?
The specifics matter: an insulated box, an ice pack, and a rider who goes directly to you rather than a parcel that waits in a warehouse.
Heat damage is invisible. A pen that has been too warm looks, smells and injects exactly like a good one, and simply does nothing. This is why the storage answer matters more than the packaging photo.
5. Is this today's price?
Imported stock reprices with the naira. Ask for today's price before you commit. The common trick is a low quote to secure your interest, followed by a revised figure once you are committed.
6. What is the total, including delivery?
Delivery, cold packaging and courier fees are sometimes separate. Ask for the landed total so you are not surprised at the door.
The price question underneath all of this
If one quote is dramatically below the others, that is not a bargain. Genuine pens have a floor cost set by buying them abroad and bringing them in cold. Falsified Ozempic found circulating in Nigeria in 2023 had been relabelled and filled with fast-acting insulin, which can cause severe hypoglycaemia in someone who does not have diabetes.
What to do after it arrives
- Open the box while the rider waits.
- Feel the box. It should still be cold.
- Check the batch number and expiry against what you were told.
- Inspect the pen: clear and colourless, seal intact, dose counter behaving as the leaflet describes.
- Refrigerate at once, away from the freezer compartment.
If anything fails those checks, do not inject, and raise it the same day while the delivery is fresh and provable.
