The short version

GLP-1 treatment in Nigeria costs between roughly ₦390,000 and ₦880,000 per pen, and a pen lasts four weeks. There is no version of this that is cheap. There are, however, ways to spend less and get more, and ways to waste the money entirely.

Choose the medication by what you can sustain

Tirzepatide produces the largest average weight loss and costs the most. Semaglutide costs less per pen and produces less. If your budget supports ₦400,000 a month indefinitely but not ₦720,000, the honest answer is to start on the one you can keep paying for.

Stopping after two months because the money ran out is the worst outcome in this market. You pay for the adjustment period, which is the unpleasant part, and then regain the weight you lost.

Stop at the dose that works

The dose ladder exists because tolerance builds gradually, not because the top dose is the goal. Plenty of people do well at 5 mg of tirzepatide or 1 mg of semaglutide. Every step up costs more per pen, so escalating on autopilot is an expensive habit.

A reasonable rule: if you are still losing weight steadily on your current dose, you do not need the next one. Step up when progress genuinely stalls for several weeks, and discuss it with your doctor rather than deciding alone.

Count pens, not months

One pen is four weekly injections, so it covers 28 days. A calendar year needs 13 pens, not 12. Budgeting by calendar month leaves you short about once a year, usually at the worst moment.

Four ways people waste money

  1. Buying a bargain pen. Prices well below the market mean counterfeit, heat-damaged, or nothing at all. The 2023 falsified pens found in Nigeria contained fast-acting insulin, which is actively dangerous rather than merely useless.
  2. Prepaying for several months. Sellers disappear. Buy one pen at a time until you have reason to trust the seller, and even then there is no discount worth that exposure.
  3. Letting a pen get warm. Above about 30°C the medicine degrades, and it looks completely normal afterwards. One ruined pen costs more than most people save in a year of careful shopping.
  4. Skipping weeks to stretch a pen. Irregular dosing gives you the side effects without the steady effect, and it makes it impossible to judge whether the dose is working.

Spend money on the things that protect the medication

A reliable fridge matters more than any supplement. So does a plan for power cuts, because a pen that sits warm through a long outage is finished. Protein is the other worthwhile spend, since weight lost on these medications includes muscle unless you eat and train to protect it.

What not to economise on
