The short version
- Unopened pens belong at 2–8°C. Once in use, the leaflets allow time below 30°C.
- A closed fridge holds safe temperature for roughly four to six hours without power.
- Freezing ruins a pen permanently. Never put one in the freezer or against a frozen block.
- A cheap fridge thermometer is the best money you will spend on this treatment.
At ₦390,000 to ₦880,000 a pen, the fridge is the most important piece of equipment in your treatment. Nigerian power supply being what it is, that deserves a plan rather than hope.
What the leaflets actually allow
| Pen | Before first use | After first use |
|---|---|---|
| Ozempic | 2–8°C, do not freeze | Up to 6 weeks below 30°C |
| Wegovy | 2–8°C, do not freeze | Up to 6 weeks below 30°C |
| Mounjaro KwikPen | 2–8°C, do not freeze | Up to 30 days below 30°C |
Two details people miss. The in-use allowance is a total, and it does not reset when the pen goes back in the fridge. And "below 30°C" describes a cool room, not a Lagos afternoon, which regularly exceeds it indoors without air conditioning.
How long a fridge holds without power
A full, closed fridge stays in range for roughly four to six hours. Every time the door opens, that clock shortens sharply. During a long outage, the single most useful thing you can do is leave it shut.
Buy a fridge thermometer. They cost very little and they answer the only question that matters. Many Nigerian fridges run colder than people think, and the back wall and top shelf can dip below zero, which destroys a pen quietly.
Where to put the pen
- Middle shelf, not the door. The door swings between temperatures every time it opens.
- Away from the back wall, where frost forms and pens freeze.
- Never in the freezer, not even briefly, and never resting directly against ice.
- In its box, with the cap on. Light degrades these medicines too.
A plan for long outages
- Keep the fridge closed from the moment the light goes.
- For outages beyond a few hours, move the pen to a cool box with ice packs, wrapped in cloth so it never touches them directly.
- If you run a generator or inverter, the fridge is the priority appliance. Even short cycles keep it in range.
- For outages of days, consider moving pens to a relative, an office or a neighbour with steadier power. It is not dramatic. It is cheaper than replacing a pen.
- Write down when the outage started and ended. The total time above range is the number that decides whether the pen is still good.
How to tell if a pen is finished
Sometimes you can see it. Cloudiness, particles, discolouration or evidence of freezing all mean do not use it. Frozen pens are unusable even if they look normal after thawing, and the leaflets say so explicitly.
Heat damage is invisible. A pen that spent a day at 35°C looks exactly like one kept perfectly. The only sign is that it stops working, which you discover four weeks and one injection later.
If your appetite suppression disappears after a pen that you know got warm, suspect the pen rather than your body, and tell whoever supplied it.
Travelling with a pen inside Nigeria
Road trips are where the most pens die. Carry it with you in an insulated bag rather than in the boot, keep it out of direct sun, and refrigerate it the moment you arrive. Between Lagos and Abuja by road in the afternoon, an ordinary bag exceeds 30°C comfortably.
